Intern Job Descriptions

Position: Intern Probation Officer
This position supports the general Probation Case Management functions of Investigation and Supervision.

Description:
This position supports the Division of Criminal Justice Services Staff, by being responsible for assisting Probation Officers in carrying out their responsibilities. Once trained the Intern works independently under the general direction of a professional DCJS staff member.

Duties/Responsibilities:
Duties will vary depending on the skills and interest of the Intern and the needs of the Division of Criminal Justice Services. Listed below are some but not all of the duties:

  • Conduct client investigations by:
    • Conducting background investigations on referred clients
    • Verifying data and writing reports
  • Supervise clients on probation by:
    • Conducting client interviews
    • Determining client's risk & needs, and making appropriate referrals
    • Monitoring client's progress in completing probation including urinalysis monitoring
  • Operate a computer using Windows 95/98, a Case Management application, a Word Processor, and/or a Spreadsheet to maintain routine records
  • Perform other related duties as required
  • Requirements:
    Criminal Justice Services accepts as Interns students who meet their institution's intern requirements
  • Assist the division at least once a week for four (4) consecutive hours. The four hour period can be anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Monday, and between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
  • Familiarity with computers especially Windows 95/98 and a Word Processor or a Spreadsheet is very helpful, but not absolutely necessary.
  • Ability to maintain confidential Court and Probation information
  • Ability to work independently within policy and procedures
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing using standard English
